WEIRD, BIZARRE and UNUSUAL (.1195)

“BIG BANG” MORE THAN A THEORY
The Nandan Kanan zoo in Odisha, India, had an unexpected visitor in January 2015. Apparently sniffing the air while passing, a from-the-wild male pachyderm detected the “in heat” smell of Heera, one of that zoo’s female elephants. Forcing its way inside, butting away two other females, the Casanova had-his-way with her. Officials eventually frightened the wild bull away by using fire-crackers.  IN-AND-OUT EARLY
Suspected of breaking into dozens of Collin County (TX) homes, Corey Lee Caldwell, 42, was arrested in February 2015. He’d been arrested 8 years earlier and sentenced to 60 years in prison, suspected of breaking into some 200 homes; Caldwell was released in May 2014 on good behavior. MEANS HEAVIER ROAD TRAFFIC
February 17, 2015 Mexico’s state oil company announced they would no longer send finished gasoline and diesel through their pipeline network. This was stopped because of a 70% increase in illegal pipeline taps in 2014. Thieves drill into Pemex’s gas lines more than 10 times each day on average. According to the latest figures available, Pemex lost an estimated $1.15 billion in fuel thefts in the first nine months of 2014. ADOLESCENT VICTIMS
The Associated Press, quote: “In South Africa, more than 860 girls become infected with HIV every week in 2013, compared with 170 boys, they said.” (2-18-15) (http://www.freep.com/story/news/world/2015/02/17/aids-now-top-killer-teens-worldwide/23554509/)
MATING SEASON RAMPAGE
An over-active male elephant crushed four cars in 10 days in January 2015, at Thailand's Khao Yai National Park. The park veterinarian explained it was probably caused by the stress of mating season. TRADED A COUCH FOR A CELL BUNK
Awaking from a nap in her upstairs bedroom, a homeowner in Petaluma, California, found a total stranger (later identified as James Adams, 44) downstairs, asleep on her couch. Creeping back upstairs, she called 911. When the intruder woke up, he attempted to sneak out the back but the police were waiting and they arrested him. Apparently he’d broken in to burglarize, but got distracted by snacks, heated up some tater tots, and after chowing down, he’d dozed off. THIS IS ONE TOUGH KID!
On February 15, 2015, near Rajasthan, India, Mum Manu was riding a train when she went into labor. Withholding screams of pain, she entered the train’s toilet, sat down and passed out. While unconscious, her baby was not only born, it fell into the toilet and down through the open end onto the tracks. A guard heard the baby cry, stopped the train and the newborn was retrieved. Last heard, both mother and son were fine. (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/pregnant-woman-gives-birth-train-5176966 )

YET, IF SHE’D BEEN RICH?
A homeless woman in Columbus, Ohio, who’d been raped under a bridge, was determined to watch her rapist, Paul Hubert, 54, get properly punished. This meant each day of his trial, for over one year, she either begged money to catch a bus, or walked the 8 miles to court. How’d that work out? He was sentenced to only 3 years, with a possibility of early release. (http://www.newser.com/story/202780/homeless-woman-walks-miles-for-rape-hearings.html)
WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!
You familiar with Reddit.com? A registered user of that site, "Captain Mercedes," has announced he’s compiled a data file cataloguing his every bowel movement in 2014. According to the data-analysis website FiveThirtyEight.com, this "researcher" used the standard "Bristol stool scale" (seven categories of excreta, by shape and consistency). DUELING OUT-OF-STATE
Most all fifty states will admit they have outdated laws on their books. One law considered for removal in Idaho reportedly was inspired by the 1804 duel between Vice President Aaron Burr and former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. Passed during Idaho's very first territorial legislature in 1864, it concerned jurisdiction for out-of-state duels. Hamilton died in New York after being shot in New Jersey and both states charged Burr with murder. (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/02/14/idaho-moves-to-repeal-dated-duel-law/)

HE’S NOW “UNPLUGGED” FROM LIFE
Nowadays, young folks become so occupied with texting and computers, some parents have to restrict their use. In one recent case, Jason Hendrix, 16, a Kentucky high school ROTC student and active church member, became so angry when his computer privileges were restricted, he murdered his parents and sister. Later, 500 miles away in Kentucky, he wounded a policeman, before at least six police shot him dead. (http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/16/us/maryland-kentucky-shooting/)
THIS “LASSIE” LEFT HOME
A miniature schnauzer named Sissy went missing after her owner, Nancy Franck, was taken some 2 miles to Mercy Medical Center in Iowa for surgery. A few hours later, a security guard at that facility used the ID tags on the just arrived doggie to call Franck’s husband, explaining the dog didn’t know which elevator to catch. A SHAKE WOULD MELT, NO DOUBT
An economic downturn and competition has caused McDonald’s restaurants to close some facilities in the U.S. and other countries. The last McDonald’s meal in Iceland was sold in 2009. Having heard the rumors that their burgers don’t decay, Hjörtur Smárason bought a cheeseburger meal and tucked it away in his garage until last year when he donated it, still in good condition, to the National Museum of Iceland. Recently put on display at the Bus Hostel in Reykjavik, the hostel manager says, "Some people have even stolen some of the fries."
