WEIRD, BIZARRE and UNUSUAL (.1075)

FOR RICH WINOS ONLY
Early November 2014, Joe Lentini went for dinner at Bobby Flay’s restaurant in Atlantic City. Admitting he knew nothing about wine, when the waitress offered a bottle priced at “thirty-seven-fifty,” he agreed. The problem came when his tab arrived. Instead of $37.50 for the wine, it was $3,750. After much negotiating, both sides agreed to $2,200 (59 times more than Lentini thought it cost). BIG MACS MEAN BIG BODIES?
According to Wellnews, one hour of punching a boxing bag burns 408 calories (based on 150-pound person), or the equivalent of 0.6 Big Mac. (Wellnews/Creators Syndicate, 10-14-14)    WOOFED HIS WAY TO UNEMPLOYMENT
While there’s no end to ways illegal drugs can be obtained and used, here is truly a unique one. On October 20, 2014, Danny Macchio was forced to submit to a urinalysis, and flunked. Who is Danny Macchio? He was a Grapevine (TX) senior police officer, with a 17-year career, until he admitted taking narcotics used to train dogs in the K-9 unit.  (The AP, 11-05-14)

WEIRD, BIZARRE and UNUSUAL (.1074)

A MIGHTY POWERFUL ORGAN
According to the column Wellnews, every day the heart creates enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles. In a lifetime, that would be the equivalent distance of driving to the moon and back. (Creators Syndicate, 10-14-14)
NOW “THRESHOLD” WEIGHT CAPABLE
Determined to get their marriage off to the right start (i.e. weight), after Crysta Danaher, 34, and Bill Anderson, 44, met in a support group for weight loss surgery, they decided to lengthen their engagement. Meaning, later, after Anderson went from 459 pounds to about 250 and Danaher lost about 180 pounds (total loss 380 pounds), they tied the knot. (Detroit Free Press, http://on.freep.com/1GdnjeH)
HAPPY-HOURS TO CATCH-UP ON
Folks in Hanover, Manitoba, Canada, seemed proud that alcohol sales in their little community had been forbidden for over 100 years. Even when put on the ballot for a 2006 election, it lost by 30 votes. But when officials decided to check records as far back as 1880, they found no bylaw exists making their town “dry.”  (Canadian Press/National Post, 7-24-14)

TAPE PUTS HIM 6 FEET UNDER
After Gary Anderson, 58, unloaded sheetrock at a high-rise construction site in Jersey City, N.J., he stopped to chat with a worker. At the same time, a 1-pound tape measure fell from a construction worker’s belt 50-stories above, hitting Anderson on the head, killing him. (The AP, 11-4-14)
HOPE HE PUT THEIR FIRES OUT?
In August 2014, a 19-year career firefighter in Clearwater, Florida, Stephen Coward lost his job, after his chief received an anonymous cell-phone video, showing him having intercourse inside a station bathroom. Also, a second person came forward, anonymously, to claim Coward had sex with as many as eight women while on duty. (WFLA/The Tampa Bay Times)
EATING SAND ON THE BEACH?
Do you keep up with German politics? In August 2014, Katja Kipping, leader of Die Linke, Germany’s largest opposition party, suggested all welfare families receive a cash voucher the equivalent of about $640, in order to enjoy a summer vacation. She was saddened 3 million children couldn’t experience “what a holiday means." (Daily Telegraph/London, 8-11-14)

ONE-UP-GUNMANSHIP
A 21-year-old fellow in Gresham, Oregon, was so proud of his new handgun, he wore it openly in order to brag. That is until another fellow robbed him, at gunpoint, of his new weapon, probably because it was better looking than his? (KPTV/Portland, 10-7-14)
EVOLUTION HAS A WAY TO GO
If you are a true Shiite Muslim, you climaxed observance of Ashura on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, mourning the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein ibn Ali, who died in 680AD. Meaning, even though he’s been dead for 1,334 years, you still should thrash your back and chest with chains and blades until your body drips blood; the more blood you lose, the stronger your belief. (The AP, 11-4-14)  (http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2014/11/04/india-observes-ashura-2/)
BIG BUSINESS, BAD BY-PRODUCT
Guess who died on September 29, 2014, at age 92? That would be Warren M. Anderson, who headed Union Carbide Corp., on December 3, 1984, when one of its pesticide plants, run by one of its subsidiaries, leaked about 40 tons of deadly methyl isocyanate gas in Bhopal. This first killed 4,000 people, causing an eventual 15,000 deaths; overall effecting 500,000 with either direct injury or birth defects. (The AP, 11-2-14)

A TOLL ROAD IN REVERSE
Most drivers aren’t surprised when rain or snow covers the road. What about U.S. currency, as in cash? When a large bag of cash fell from an armored truck on Maryland’s Interstate 27 and loose bills blew across the highway, drivers stopped and scrambled from their vehicles, grabbing and snatching all bills possible. While the amount in the bag was not disclosed, police stated they and the truck’s driver found only about $200. PARENTS WOULD DISOWN THEM
Dr. Sean Perry of the Marathon (Florida) Veterinary Hospital has saved the life of Buttercup, an orange tabby cat who needed blood, by giving him a transfusion from a West Palm Beach dog blood bank. The U.S. National Library of Medicine shows 62 cats have been known to receive such "xenotransfusions," and cats are apparently the only animals - besides dogs - that can safely process dog blood. (Keynoter/Key West, 10-4-14)
A NAUGHTY GAL
A Texas woman, Megan Davis Hoelting, 31, was arrested three times in one month for assault, theft and public intoxication. Now, she’s in jail for breaking into her husband’s friend’s home. According to that friend, when he awoke Mrs. Hoelting was straddling his legs, dressed only in her underwear.
