WEIRD, BIZARRE and UNUSUAL (.1060)

SHE’S BARKING FOR FINANCING
Doris Carvalho of Tampa, Florida, is looking for new venture capital to expand her hobby, making handbags priced at $1,000 each. What “fabric” and skill is required to make a purse this expensive? It requires 50 hours per bag to make, and two pounds per product of recycled dogs’ hair. (BayNews9.com/St. Petersburg 9-9-14)
HE MUST MISS HIS CELL FRIENDS?
Carlos Fields, 40, got so tired of waiting on a bus in Ft. Worth, Texas, when it arrived he hit the driver and threatened him with a knife. This got him sentenced to 30 years in prison. Of course, during Fields’ over-reactive life he’d already served prison time for a total of 17 crimes. (The AP, 8-1-14)
DYSFUNCTIONAL D.C.
Same day in September 2014, Washington, D.C., and New York City made traffic-camera announcements, with Washington, D.C., declaring a revenue crisis, and New York reporting one speed camera alone in Brooklyn earned $77,550 in a single day. While New York has fewer cameras, that one alone created 1,551 tickets. D.C. officials say $80 million revenue is expected this fiscal year… a $7.3 million loss below projections. They also estimate a $13 million loss next year. (Could it be the revenue is down because cameras are doing what they’re meant to?)
